High Point Wellness Centre is excited to welcome Naturopathic Doctor Kristen Harpell to the High Point Team this December! Dr. Kristen will be opening her family practice in the clinic after completing her four year degree in Doctor of Naturopathy at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. We sat down with Dr. Kristen to ask her a bit about herself and how she can help the patients and community here at High Point.
So Kristen, what makes you most excited about joining the High Point team?
I think the opportunity to work with so many amazing people here at High Point has me very excited to begin practice. From what I have seen of the clinic here so far, it really seems like a small close-knit group of people who want to make their lives and the lives of others happier and healthier. I am from a small rural area where everyone knows and cares about everyone else and it is good to find this same feeling in a larger centre. I can’t wait to get involved and do my part for the community.
How did you get into Naturopathic Medicine?
I have always wanted to be a doctor, and when I was in university on the path to medical school I happened to attend a health care career night where a naturopathic doctor spoke. As she described the philosophy of naturopathic medicine, I knew in that moment that this was the kind of doctor I wanted to become. I still remember literally running home from the event (it was raining and I hadn’t brought an umbrella) to look up the school and requirements to get in.
How can you help the patients here at HPWC?
Patients can think of me a little like a family doctor – you can come to me with any health concern you may be experiencing or a health goal for which you are striving. After we have a diagnosis for what you’re experiencing, my approach is to work with you to find ways of strategically fitting new healthy habits into your lifestyle smoothly. This way you start to feel better with as few drastic changes as possible. I also have a strong background in pediatrics, and being from a big family (4 kids!) I know how the health of one person can affect the health of the whole family.
How would you describe your style of practice?
One of the great things about naturopathic medicine is the broad scope of conditions that we can treat and the scope of therapies we are able to use. This gives me a lot of options when deciding how to best proceed with each case – and most importantly, it lets the person I’m working with have more of a say in making important health decisions. I want people to feel informed about their health and bodies, and ultimately I want people to feel better.
How do you feel about working with the other practitioners at the clinic?
Everyone that I have met is so good at what they do, and the patients I’ve talked to have nothing but amazing things to say about their clinicians. This definitely inspires me to step up my game and do everything I can to help people feel better and reach their health goals. I think it’s now my job to make everyone in the High Point Community comfortable with me and prove that I can be a valuable asset of the health team. I’m excited to get started!
If you would like to meet Dr. Kristen feel free to stop her in the waiting room and introduce yourself. You can also book a complimentary 15 minute Meet & Greet to see if naturopathic medicine is right for you.
